Vodder Method MLD.

The Vodder method is the original manual lymphatic drainage protocol, developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s and still taught today by the Dr. Vodder School International. It is the credential most European and North American medical insurers recognize as the baseline for lymphatic drainage practice.

Also known as: Dr. Vodder method, classical MLD, Dr. Vodder's manual lymph drainage
45–75 min session $80–180 per session
I. The technique in plain terms

Vodder MLD uses four specific stroke types — stationary circles, pump, scoop, and rotary — all performed with extremely light pressure (roughly 30 to 40 mmHg) directed toward intact lymph node chains. The strokes are slow, rhythmic, and follow a precise sequence that begins at the neck nodes and works outward to the treatment area. A full session typically lasts 45 to 75 minutes.

II. Who should look for a Vodder-certified therapist

Anyone recovering from aesthetic surgery, managing lipedema or lymphedema, or looking for the most medically recognized form of MLD. Insurance coverage is more likely with a Vodder-certified therapist than with a therapist who completed a weekend workshop. Post-mastectomy patients in particular should prioritize Vodder, Földi, or Leduc certification when choosing a therapist.

III. How to verify the credential

Vodder-certified therapists can be looked up on the Dr. Vodder School's public directory (vodderschool.com). The credential has three levels: Basic (120 hours), Therapy 1 (135 hours for CDT), and Full Therapist (200+ hours with CDT phase 1 competency). Ask which level your therapist holds.

IV. Typical session length

A full Vodder session is 60 minutes, though 75 or 90 minute sessions are common for larger treatment areas (full body or bilateral leg lipedema). Shorter sessions (30 to 45 minutes) are sometimes used for maintenance or pregnancy drainage.

V. What you pay and why

$80 to $180 per session in most US cities, €60 to €130 in Europe, £70 to £140 in the UK. Vodder-certified therapists charge a premium over generalist MLD because of the 135+ hour certification requirement. Package pricing (typically 10 sessions) offers 10 to 20 percent savings off the single-session rate.

VI. What The Editors would ask

Are you Vodder-certified, and which level? Can you name your training school and year of completion? Do you perform complete decongestive therapy (Phase 1 intensive) or only MLD? How do you handle post-surgical drainage specifically, if that is why you're coming?
